Survey finds about 180,000 giant tortoises on Aldabra Atoll

A new count by Seychelles Islands Foundation and the University of Exeter puts the free-roaming tortoises of Aldabra at roughly 180,000, the largest figure on record. In the 1800s hunting had left fewer than a thousand.

It shows a species pushed to the edge can come back when a place stays protected for decades.

Berlin's tree map has 12,000 neighbors watering street trees

Berliners use a free app called Gieß den Kiez that colors each of the city's 900,000 street trees by how thirsty it is, so volunteers know where a watering can helps most. On the city's hottest day this year, residents poured about 8,000 liters over trees.

City crews cannot reach every tree in a heatwave, and a shared map turns ordinary care into real help.

FDA approves an added immunotherapy for one type of stage III colon cancer

On October 8 the FDA approved atezolizumab alongside standard chemotherapy after surgery for stage III colon cancer with a specific tumor trait called mismatch repair deficiency. In a trial of 711 adults, the risk of the cancer returning or of death was about half that of chemotherapy alone.

It gives doctors a proven new option right after surgery, when the goal is keeping the cancer from coming back.

Applies only to tumors with mismatch repair deficiency.
